Definition and Meaning of Vastu

Vastu is a 3000-year old Indian science of architecture and design, which aims to create a positive energy flow within the house for the well-being of the occupants. The discipline of Vastu balances the five elements viz. Earth, Sky (Space), Fire, Water, and Air that corresponds to Vastu Shastra directions.

Different Directions in Vastu

There are four main directions per Vastu: North, South, East and West. These are known as cardinal directions. Further, there are four sub-directions: Northeast & Northwest, Southeast & Southwest. These are known as ordinal directions and are found between the main directions. Each direction has its own significance in Vastu, but ordinal directions are more significant than cardinal ones because they hold both directions' energy.

Role of Each Direction in Vastu

1 East (Poorva or Poorab): Do not block the East direction as the family males can suffer from problems.

2 West (Paschima): Quarter of name, fame, and prosperity.

3 North (Uttara): The direction should be kept unblocked to prevent female issues and problems.

4 South (Dakhina): Quarter of wealth and happiness.

5 North-East (Eeshanya): North-East direction is a source of health, wealth, and many positive vibes.

6 North-West (Vayu): This direction represents the course of change in life related to business, family, and relationships.

7 South-East (Aagneya): It represents the fire element and is ideal for having the kitchen.

8 South-West (Nairuthya): This quarter is the source of personality, behaviour and origin of longevity and death.
