Types of Mudras in Human Body

What is Mudra ?

Mudra is a Sanskrit word, meaning gesture. Mudras are gestures performed by hands and fingers to improve physical, psychological and spiritual health. Different Mudras are practiced to carry out specific goals of healing the body and channelising the energy.

Importance of Mudras

Mudras are powerful postures of hands, fingers, palms or body that help in curing most diseases. The practice of Mudras also help awaken the Chakras, balance the energy flow in the body and mind leading a person to a high state of consciousness.

Some Important Types of Mudras

Use these eight energizing Mudras to balance your psychological and physical health and increase the Chakras' energy flow.

Gyan /Jnana Mudra

The Mudra to gain and expand knowledge. A great Mudra to increase concentration and memory power.

Method : Touch the tip of the thumb with the tip of the index finger. Stretch out the rest three fingers straight.

Benefits : The regular practice of Gyan Mudra helps in treating psychological disorders like stress, depression, hysteria.

  • It helps prevent insomnia.
  • The mudra improves memory power, focus, and sharpness of the brain.
  • It brings inner peace and calmness.

Dhyan / Samadhi Mudra

The Dhyan Mudra is practiced for deeper and profound concentration (dhyan). This Mudra fosters peace and tranquility.

Method : Sit with a straight back and legs crossed. Place left or right hand on the other hand, with the palm facing upwards.

Benefits : The Dhyan mudra relaxes the brain and improves focusing and concentration power.

  • It cures high or low blood pressure.
  • It strengthens body muscles.
  • The Mudra releases anger and mental health problems.

Ganesh Mudra

Stimulate the Anahat (Heart Chakra) by practicing the Ganesh Mudra.

Method : Place your left hand in front of your chest with your palm facing outwards and thumb downwards. Bring your right hand in front of your left hand palm facing the hand. Interlock your fingers. Pull the hands apart on exhalation and release the hands upon inhalation.

Benefits : The pulling of the hands help release tensions in the cardiac area.

  • The Mudra brings energy to the Heart Chakra aiding it to perform its functions better.
  • The Mudra has mental and spiritual benefits.

Hakini Mudra

The Mudra is named after the Hindu Goddess Hakini. The Mudra controls the Anjna Chakra (Third Eye Chakra).

Method : Join the tip of the right-hand fingers with the tip of the left-hand fingers. After joining the tip, spread the fingers apart.

Benefits : As you balance your fingers in the Mudra, it balances the right and left hemispheres of the brain.

  • The Mudra enhances memory, brainpower, and attentiveness.

Namaste Mudra

When you fold your hands in Namaste Mudra and bend, you surrender yourself and become humble.

Method : Join both hands in front of the Heart Chakra, close your eyes and bow down.

Benefits : The Mudra connects the two hemispheres of the brain.

  • It removes ego and fear from the person.
  • Makes the practitioner kind and compassionate.

Samana Mudra

The Mudra for leading a balanced life.

Method : The tips of the four fingers should touch the tip of the thumb. The gesture will resemble the bud. It is also known as Makul Mudra.

Benefits : It balances the overall health of the person.

Sandhi Mudra

The Mudra keeps the physical body healthy, especially the health of joints.

Method : The Mudra is performed differently with each hand. For right hand: Touch the tip of the thumb with the tip of the ring finger. For left hand: Touch the thumb tip with the middle fingertip. All other fingers of the hand will be stretched.

Benefits : Practice the Mudra to relieve knee pain and neck pain.

  • It is helpful in curing arthritis.
  • The Mudra lessens the chronic pain of the joints.
  • Helps balance the Earth and Space elements in the body.

Surbhi Mudra

A very powerful and efficient Mudra for healing the body.

Method : Bring your hand in Namaste Mudra but do not join your thumbs. Touch the tip of the index finger with the tip of the middle finger that are opposite to each other. Now, join the tip of the ring finger with the tip of the little finger opposite to each other.

Benefits : The Mudra is effective against rheumatism and arthritis.

  • It cures health problems like digestion, stomach diseases, urine problem.
  • The performance of this Mudra aids in the better functioning of all glands like the pituitary, pineal, thyroid, and adrenaline glands.
